get to know

hell's kitchen

Situated in the western section of Manhattan's Midtown, Hell's Kitchen is a vibrant neighborhood where sleek new high-rises meet historic brick apartment houses. Many flock to the area for its outstanding restaurants and proximity to major employment centers, while Central Park, the Hudson River, bustling Times Square and the Theater District underscore Hell's Kitchen's reputation as one of the best residential destinations in the city. In this diverse something-for-everyone landscape, you'll have no trouble finding a late-night slice, luxury retail therapy or an easy subway ride to anywhere in the city.

The Name

The vivid moniker "Hell's Kitchen" is rooted in the neighborhood's gritty reputation as a dangerous bastion of crime. The term was first ascribed to another center of the city's Irish poor, Downtown's notorious Five Points, but was applied regularly to this Midtown enclave by the turn of the 19th century. While the neighborhood improved substantially, efforts pushed for rebranding the area as Midtown West or Clinton. However, old and new residents embrace the authenticity of the original Hell's Kitchen nickname as a badge of honor.

Hudson River Park

Alongside Manhattan's western edge, 500-acre Hudson River Park offers glorious waterfront outdoor space, world-class recreation and breathtaking sunset views. At Pier 96 near West 55th Street, relax at the spectacular Clinton Cove Lawn or take kayaking lessons. Further south, you'll find the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, a dog park and cruise departures.

Billionaire's Row

Some of the world's most impressive skyscrapers line nearby 57th Street, on a stretch known as Billionaire's Row. Here, you'll find the tallest building by roof height in the entire country, Central Park Tower. Clocking in at a dizzying 1,550 feet, the tower also features New York City's first Nordstrom location.

Carnegie Hall

Famed Carnegie Hall commands Seventh Avenue between 56th and 57th streets and offers a wealth of live performances from classical symphonies to headlining comics. Built in 1891 with a mansard roof, studio apartments were added to the top of the building just three years later. Over the years, they served as home to such luminaries as Leonard Bernstein, Marlon Brando and Don Shirley, as depicted in the film "Green Book."
